Year Round New Year’s Resolution: A Clutter-Free Bathroom

Your New Year's resolutions should become year round resolutions. You deserve a home that feels like a sanctuary, but sometimes clutter and disorganization can lead to feelings that are less than cozy. This is why decluttering your home is such a popular New Year’s resolution; the feeling of a clutter-free home is both relaxing and empowering.

Every decluttering project needs to start somewhere; if you start small, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed. Today, let’s talk about a clutter-free bathroom. Bathroom organization doesn’t have to be hard; all you need is an eye for planning and some practical, simple organization tips.

Use Countertop Trays

It might seem counterintuitive to add another item to your bathroom countertop, but bottle trays, ring dishes, and other countertop organization tools will help break up the bathroom counter space and corral the clutter into designated spaces. Creating a designated place for each of your important, daily-use items will help save space and make your countertop look nicer.

Optimize Bathroom Drawers

Bathroom organization isn’t just about what you can see. Bathroom storage, especially in small bathrooms, is a vital part of keeping your bathroom clutter-free. Don’t let the drawers you have turn into junk drawers; instead, keep drawers organized by type of item. Drawer dividers can help ensure that your items are stored where you want them so that you can easily access them when you need them.

Create Spaces to Maintain the Clutter

Some items are never going to be easy to organize and put away. Once you accept this, you can create spaces that will maintain the clutter and keep it to a minimum.

An example of this is jewelry. When you take off your jewelry at the end of the day, instead of just leaving it on the counter, put it in a ring dish. This will help keep your area uncluttered, and it will also protect the jewelry from getting lost or getting knocked down the sink drain.

Like with trays, your ring dishes can be a beautiful part of your bathroom decor. The elegant simplicity of a white ring dish with gold accents will look great with any decor style. You can elevate your bathroom’s sophistication with a marble ring dish, or use a botanical-inspired ring dish to bring a touch of nature’s beauty to your bathroom space.

Evaluate Your Products

One of the biggest contributors to bathroom clutter is makeup, skincare, and hair care products. Most of us end up with more than we really use, so when you are working on a clutter-free bathroom, take the time to look at each bottle, jar, or tube.

The first thing to look at is the expiration date. These products do expire, and if yours are old, it’s a no-brainer to discard them. This is especially true for makeup; it’s not safe to use expired makeup around your eyes and mouth.

After that, be thoughtful about which products you want to keep. Give yourself permission to discard things that you don’t really love or wouldn’t buy again today. If the products are new, unopened, and unexpired, then you can consider donating them; if not, you should toss them.

Use Reusable Jars

It is very common for homes to end up with several bottles of the same soaps, shampoos, lotions, and other personal products that all have a small amount in each. Save space by combining these things into a reusable bottle or jar. You can then refill this jar when you bring home new products. A clear or translucent glass or plastic jar will make it easy to see how much of the product you have left.

Don’t Forget the Cabinets

Cabinets should be organized, too. When you’re ready to declutter the bathroom, pull everything out of the cabinets. You’d be surprised what might end up in a dark cabinet corner. Toss what you no longer need, and designate your cabinet spaces as best as you can.

Lean In To Your Aesthetic

A clutter-free bathroom doesn’t have to be a stark, minimalist space– unless that’s what makes you happy. Your home is your sanctuary, and the end result of your bathroom organization should be a space that speaks to you. You can still have decorative items and quirky decor that make your space personalized. Decluttering isn’t about getting rid of everything; it’s about reframing how you perceive the space.
